Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 21, 2026
UnKlaimed, LLC ("UnKlaimed," "we," "us") helps people find and recover unclaimed property held by U.S. state governments. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. By using our website or app, you agree to this Policy.
Information we collect
- Contact information you provide — your name, email address, phone number, and mailing address.
- Identity and claim information needed to file an unclaimed-property claim — your date of birth, Social Security number or Tax ID, a government-issued photo ID, and supporting documents you upload (e.g., proof of address, proof of SSN, and, for claims on behalf of a deceased owner, death certificates or estate documents).
- Payment information — in states where you pay our fee directly, we use a third-party payment processor (Stripe) to securely store a payment method. We do not store your full card number on our systems. In states where the state pays our fee to us directly, including California, we do not collect a payment method from you at all.
- Usage information — basic technical data such as device type and pages viewed, used to operate and improve the service.
- Public state records — the owner name, last known address, holder and amount that each state publishes in its own unclaimed-property file. We hold this whether or not you have ever contacted us, because it is the list we search. See "If we wrote to you first" below.
How we use your information
- To search official state records and identify property that may belong to you.
- To verify your identity, prepare and file your claim with the appropriate state agency, and, where required, arrange remote online notarization.
- To keep you updated on your claim's status and to collect our fee after your recovery (see our Terms of Service).
- To provide support, prevent fraud, and comply with legal obligations.
- To write to people named in a state's published unclaimed-property file to tell them it exists, using only that public record and address verification. See "If we wrote to you first" below, including how to stop receiving mail from us permanently.
Who we share it with
We share information only as needed to provide the service:
- State unclaimed-property agencies — the claim form and required documentation are submitted to the state that holds your property.
- Service providers — identity verification (Stripe Identity), payment processing (Stripe), remote online notarization (BlueNotary), address verification and mail production for the letters described below, secure data hosting, and email delivery. These providers are bound to use your information only to perform services for us.
- Legal — when required by law, subpoena, or to protect our rights or prevent fraud.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
If we wrote to you first
Sometimes we contact a property owner before they have ever heard of us. If a letter from UnKlaimed arrived in your mailbox unprompted, this section explains exactly how that happened, because you are entitled to know.
- Where your name and address came from. Not from a data broker, and not from anything you gave us. Every state publishes a list of the unclaimed property it holds, including the owner's name and the last known address the original bank, employer or insurer had on file. In California that list is published by the State Controller's Office and is a public record. That is our only source for the initial letter.
- What we did with the address. The address a state publishes is often the one you had when the account went quiet, which can be decades old. Before mailing, we check it against USPS-licensed address-verification and change-of-address services, and, where those come back empty, against a commercial address-lookup service, so the letter reaches your current address or is not mailed at all. We use those services only to decide where — and whether — to send a letter about property already listed in your name.
- What we do not do. We do not sell, rent or trade that list. We do not use it for advertising, and we do not build a profile on you. If you never respond, the only information we hold about you is what the state already published.
How to stop receiving mail from us. Email privacy@getunklaimed.com with the subject "Do not mail," or reply to any letter we send. We will add you to a permanent suppression list and you will not receive another letter from us, including about a different property. You do not need to give a reason, and doing so does not affect your right to claim the property — you can always claim it free, directly from the state, whether or not you ever speak to us.
How we protect your information
We use encryption in transit and at rest, restrict access to authorized personnel, and store your full Social Security number only within the encrypted claim document required to file. We retain claim records as long as needed to provide the service and to meet legal and record-keeping requirements, then delete or de-identify them.
Your choices and rights
You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information, and you may opt out of marketing emails at any time using the unsubscribe link or by contacting us. Depending on your state (including California and Colorado), you may have additional rights to know, delete, correct, and limit the use of your information, and to appeal a decision. To exercise any right, email us at the address below; we will not discriminate against you for doing so.
To delete your account and associated data, see Delete your account & data.
Children
Our service is intended for adults (18+). We do not knowingly collect information from children.
Changes to this Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. Material changes will be posted here with a new "last updated" date.
